WPF/E = Silverlight

OK, this is a first. Microsoft takes a crummy, unmemorable name like WPF/E and turns it into something interesting, like Silverlight.

Granted, some people still aren't going to like the new name, you can't please everyone, but I like the direction. Read more about Silverlight here: http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight Or on Soma's blog.

Will Silverlight also run on Linux? Flash is supported on platforms and browsers beyond the big 3, which if MS wants to challenge Flash, especially when it already has such a high penetration and deployment, they will need to be everywhere Flash is.

I love that they created a new TLA (Three Letter Acronym) in their description:

Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications (RIAs) for the Web.

This is a classic marketing ploy: Create a new term, then claim to be the first to support it. Now they can say Silverlight was designed for RIAs from the ground up! Remember when Crest toothpaste had Floristat? That was simply their brand name for Floride, and since it was trademarked no one else could include it in their Toothpaste.
