Virtual Appliances

I've been a fan of VMWare for a long time now. It is a much more robust Virtual Machine solution then Virtual PC, which was recently purchased by Microsoft. In a move no doubt to compete with Microsoft's marketing behind Virtual PC, VMWare now offers a free VMWare player and a free VMWare server. Neither of those offer the robust rollback functionality of VMWare Workstation (which allows incredible forking and cloning.)

VMWare now has the Virtual Machine Technology Network (VMTN) which contains a number of pre-built, ready to run Virtual Appliances. These are a great resource. You can simply download one of the free VM Soltiuons above, and then download an appliance, insert the appliance into the VM Solution and you are up and running. Don't worry about how hard it is to install and configure Oracle Database 10g, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or BEA WebLogic Platform, they have done all the hard work for you.

In addition to the free VM solutions from VMWare, and the multiple forking and cloning roll back support, they also offer much more configuration of the hardware, better support for more operating systems, and higher performance, they also offer a built in screen capture solution similar to Camtasia.

Oracle will let you download all their databases for development / evaluation purposes, but then you need to license them before you deploy.
